About the Energy Partnership
Brazil's electricity mix has long been anchored by hydropower, providing a comparatively clean foundation. Recent challenges with rainfall patterns have highlighted the value of a more diversified and resilient generation matrix. The country's exceptional solar and wind resources are enabling this shift, with both sources growing rapidly and becoming increasingly important complements to hydropower within the renewable portfolio. Germany and Brazil share a commitment to the full decarbonisation of the global economy within this century, a goal reinforced by their 2015 partnership and ongoing cooperation in the energy transition.
The German-Brazilian Energy Partnership was relaunched in 2017. Since then, highly successful workshops and panel discussions have been held to foster a high-level policy dialogue between Germany and Brazil. In March 2023, the Brazilian Minister of Mines and Energy and the German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, signed, in Brasília, a communiqué in favor of the continuation of the Energy Partnership, evidencing the successful cooperation to promote the energy transition and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In October 2023, the 2º Steering Committee meeting of the Energy Partnership was held in Brasilia between the state secretaries of the BMWE and MME. During the event, the two working groups “Just and inclusive energy transition (JIET)” and “Clean energy for industry decarbonization (CEID)” was announced, which remain current topics for the Partnership.
The Partners of the Partnership are the German Ministry for Economy and and Energy (BMWE) and the Brazilian Mining and Energy Ministry (MME), as well as the Brazilian Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MRE). Some of the priority issues addressed in the JIET and CEID working groups include: Agrivoltaics Solutions, Social and Economic Aspects of Energy transition, Transmission Grid Expansion, Hydrogen, Energy Efficiency, Carbon Markets and Price Mechanism and Industry Decarbonization.
